Robert Marawa (born, March 1, 1973). He is a renowned South African sports journalist, radio, and television presenter. He hosts Marawa Sports Worldwide, which airs on 947.

Robert was born in Vryheid, South Africa, to his parents, Frank Marawa and Phumlile Marawa. He grew up alongside his two sisters, Vanessa Marawa and Gugu Marawa. Gugu is heavily involved in the sports industry. She also worked as the South African national football team’s deputy manager, while Vanessa is known for her participation in Survivor.

Early life

Robert Marawa was born on March 1,1973 in Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal. He grew up alongside his two sisters, Vanessa Marawa and Gugu Marawa.

Growing up, he always dreamed of being a sports commentator. From a young age, he would make a recording of himself while reading a newspaper.

Education

Robert Marawa attended Hilton College in Pietermaritzburg in 1991. He later attended the University of the Witwatersrand in 1992 to study Law.  In 1996, he decided to follow his dream of becoming a sports broadcaster.

Career

Marawa’s first shot at television began at SABC in 1996 as a continuity presenter. And later, he became the lead presenter. He joined SABC1 as a continuity presenter when the SABC rebranded its channels into SABC1, SABC2, and SABC3. He introduced shows and spoke to the audience in Zulu and English.

Two years into his sports broadcasting career, Robert covered the FIFA World Cup in France and has covered every World Cup since. 

Marawa was the voice behind 083 Sports@6 on Metro FM. He co-hosted the 12th Metro FM Music Awards, alongside Azania Mosaka, in 2013.

In 1997, he auditioned and joined Topsport to anchor Laduma, the hit live soccer show. After this, he was chosen to help anchor the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

He co-hosted Afcon Daily Show(2025-2026) on Netflix alongside Minnie Dlamini and Melissa Reddy during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Robert was fired from SABC News in July 2017 but returned in June 2018. He hosted the Discovery Sports Centre on Metro FM and Thursday Night Live with Marawa on SuperSport. (his flagship television talk show). After 13 years of service, Robert Marawa was fired at Supersport.

Marawa was announced as the official compere of the 2015 Glo-Caf Awards alongside Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim. He published his biography, Gqimm Shelele: The Robert Marawa Story, in 2022. He co-hosted The Quantum Football Show alongside Skhumba Hlophe in January 2024.

Robert Marawa hosted the 2025 Hollywoodbets Super League Awards, sharing the stage with broadcaster Vusiwe Ngcobo. He also co-hosted the AFCON Daily Show on Netflix.

Robert Marawa took his talents to the radio. His first stop was Metro FM, where he landed a 30-minute slot at the beginning of the show at the Discovery Sports Centre. Robert Marawa also presented  Blow by Blow, a boxing show on SABC 2.

In 2021, Robert Marawa was back on the air with Vuma FM, Sowetan Live, and Rise FM. He presents the show Marawa Sports Worldwide, which streams on these three platforms.

Robert survived three heart attacks. He spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit after he tested positive for COVID-19. 

Personal life

Pearl Thusi and Robert Marawa’s love story ended after three years. Reports indicate that Robert Marawa and Pearl Thusi broke off due to personal differences. 

Robert Marawa was in a relationship with TV personality Pearl Thusi. The two had some lovely moments, such as the surprise party that Pearl Thusi planned for Robert on his birthday in 2017. They first went public with their relationship at the 2016 Durban July, and broke up in 2017. He has a son, Awande, with the actress and singer Zoe Mthiyane, from a previous relationship.
